To satisfy various user demands, wireless network technologies continue to develop and are put to practical use. In particular, IEEE 802.11-based WLANs have grown in popularity because of their high-speed access bandwidth and ease of installation of WLAN access points (APs) without any license. As a result, WLANs have been installed widely and many mobile devices have been able to access the Internet everywhere everytime through WLANs. Furthermore, a wide variety of applications on mobile devices have been running over a WLAN, which have different quality of service (QoS) requirements such as large bandwidth for file synchronization applications, low delay for voice over IP (VoIP) applications, and both for video chat applications. However, as the popularity of WLANs grows, many drawbacks of WLANs become obvious. In WLANs, all mobile devices, or wireless clients, and an AP share the wireless channel fairly with carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA), and thereby the WLAN ensures fairness among each at the media access control (MAC)-layer level. However, fairness at the MAC-layer level does not mean the fairness at upper layers. For instance, when we use transmission control protocol (TCP) as a transport-layer …

Performance Analysis for a New Medium Access Control Protocol in Wireless LANs
One fundamental issue in high-speed wireless local area networks (LANs) is to develop efficient medium access control (MAC) protocols. In this paper, we focus on the performance improvement in both MAC layer and transport layer by using a novel medium access control protocol for high-speed wireless LANs deploying carrier sense multiple access/collision avoidance (CSMA/CA). We first present a re...

The IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol for medium access control in wireless Local Area Networks (LANs) is the de facto standard for wireless ad hoc networks, however, it does not perform well in terms of delay, throughput, and specially, fairness in multihop wireless ad hoc networks. Many researches have been published in this area. Among them, a modification of the IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol was proposed...

IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol for medium access control in wireless Local Area Networks (LANs) is the de facto standard for wireless ad hoc networks. However, it does not perform well in terms of fairness, delay and throughput specially, in multihop networks. The problem is due to both the MAC and link layer contentions. Many research papers have been published in these fields. Among them, a modific...

description Design, analysis and implementation of wireless protocols and algorithms. One of the main challenge in wireless ad hoc networks is Medium Access Control. The IEEE 802.11 standard provides a communication mode called DCF (Distributed Coordination Function) that is fully distributed and suitable for ad hoc networks. However, the MAC (Medium Access Control) protocol described in 802.11...
متن کاملAn energy-efficient, transport-controlled MAC protocol for wireless sensor networks
In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), one major cause of wasted energy is that the wireless network interface is always on to accept possible traffic. Many medium access control (MAC) protocols therefore adopted a periodic listen-and-sleep scheme to save energy, at sacrifice of end-to-end latency and throughput. Another cause is packet dropping due to network congestion, necessitating a lightweig...
